Starting Off With a Bang
I made it! I'm finally on the road! After finishing up some work on the van and putting some random bits into storage, I hit the road yesterday at around 4:30pm. I had hoped to make it to Ohio, but there was a lot of construction on the highways. This led me to stop in Indiana just shy of the Ohio border for two reasons: 1) way more stop-and-go traffic than I expected, and 2) rough roads are very bumpy, which jostled everything in the van, especially the ceiling I just put in. Around 11:30 last night, I hit another extremely bumpy patch of road, and heard a loud *bang* behind me as one of the planks had worked itself loose. I had used a nail gun to attach the planks to the ceiling, and while nail guns are awesome, and I'm extremely grateful to my friend Corey for letting me borrow his, I should have heeded his advice sooner about screwing the planks in. We both thought that it wasn't urgent. We were both wrong.
So, I stop off at the nearest exit to assess the damage. Nothing major, but it did take down my blackout curtains (which were mounted to the ceiling). I decide to find the nearest Wal-Mart and figure it out in the morning. Luckily, Wal-Mart is close, so I park near some RVs, jerry-rig up some privacy by attaching my curtains with magnets, crawl over the clutter that I was supposed to organize, and crash on the bed. First night in the bed! I was sweaty and overly concerned with breathing all of the oxygen up, but I eventually got some fitful sleep, having anxiety dreams about sleeping in a Wal-Mart parking lot. The one that really stands out was where there were "RVer bathrooms" set up, that were plots of kitty litter under a giant tent. The bed was super comfy though. Memory foam is the shit.
I think my optimism might be solar powered, because when I woke up this morning and pulled my blackout curtains down, letting the sun shine in, I just felt like, "Okay, let's do this." Grabbed the power drill, a handful of screws, and fixed the ceiling. NBD. Did some organization. Bought a few supplies at Wal-Mart. Drove a block over to the gym to get my shower. Headed over to Starbucks to sit down and blog.
So, on the whole, I'm feeling pretty dang good about day one. I think I can do this, guys.
